Practice Areas
Murder Cases
Murder cases are highly unlikely to settle early on. Anyone facing a life charge needs to be sure they have a lawyer who has experience successfully handling these cases. I have met too many inmates serving life who say they wish they fought harder at the time but they never imagined they could be convicted of something they didn't do. Fight like your life is on the line, because it is.
Felonies
Many felonies other than murder carry life sentences. Kidnapping to commit robbery has a maximum of life. Non-life charges can carry real time. Serious felony cases need serious felony lawyers. To be able to get the best offer, you have to prepare the case for trial and find the strengths and weaknesses of the prosecution case. The best offers aren't made out of pity. They are made because DA's don't like to lose.
Drug Cases
I have extensive experience handling drug charges both in private practice and as a public defender. Fighting drug charges involves a different knowledge base and different strategy from other felonies.
I have experience successfully handling drug charges from marijuana to heroin.
Appeals
I handle appeals in the California Court of Appeals and post-conviction cases in local Superior Courts. An appeal looks at a conviction to see if the defendant's rights were violated and if they received a fair trial. Appellate courts can overturn verdicts or send them back for a new trial. Appeals are time sensitive, so if you or a loved one was recently convicted act soon.
Misdemeanors
Misdemeanors move much faster than most felonies. Although the maximum sentence for a misdemeanor is one year in county jail per charge, even a shorter term in jail can cause significant upheaval to someone's life. A sentence of probation can be more severe than a lengthy prison term if it results in lifetime deportation. Misdemeanor convictions can trigger loss of professional licenses and student loans.
